The Altar The altar should be the centerpiece of you studio, so pay particular attention to it. You need to go all out here, sparing no expense to make tit the “wow” factor of your yoga studio. Though your studio will always be a bit of a dive due to the amateurish work done by your friends, family, and studio assistants, your students are sure to overlook that once they feast their eyes on the fabulous altar displayed before them. Keep in mind that you are going for show and drama here. Begin by purchasing a large, yet simple, shiny bronze statue of Buddha as the centerpiece of the altar. On either side of the Buddha place several elaborately carved deities and gods of the Hindu faith--Kali, Ganesh, and Hanuman are perennial favorites. This imparts a visual tension to your altar and insures that your students don’t nod off while they contemplate Buddha’s blissful face. In strategic spots, place several candles of different shapes, colors, and scents to illuminate the altar in a shrine-like elegance. Spot beams are particularly effective for creating a dynamic theatrical drama to your alter. You can also use incense for great visual effect. Simply light several sticks so the smoke will billow in a smog-like atmosphere, symbolizing yogic knowledge cutting through the mist of worldly ignorance. Most importantly, suggest that students leave small offerings on the altar with the hope that some will actually leave valuables or loose change. This has been a lucrative revenue stream for some studios. TIP: If this seems a bit too daunting for you, consider hiring a Vedic yoga studio altar designer to have the work done for you. BONUS TIP: Have several pictures of saints, gurus, and gods in cheap frames and hang them around the altar. Place a picture of yourself smack in the middle of the rest to instantly join the pantheon of the gods. In some cases, students will begin to worship you. This is always good for extra income.
