The Secret Room

Every successful yoga studio has a secret room. It is used to create a sense of mystery and to draw added revenue to your studio. In addition, it gives your studio an air of intrigue with a promise of conveying secret knowledge to your students, which hopefully they are more than happy to pay for.

The secret room can be any size or shape. Just make sure that it has a sturdy door. Closets have been used to great advantage in some famous yoga studios. In any event, once you decide on what to use as your secret room, put a sign on the door that says “For Advanced Practitioners Only.” Although no practicing goes on in this room, it will give the impression of being used for advanced practice or perhaps initiation into a secret yoga society. Of course, you will never have anything going on in that room, but it will be great for talking your students into taking high-priced workshops and classes with the expectation that they will someday be allowed to enter this room to receive the secret yoga knowledge.

To maximize the effect of the room, hide in the room occasionally. This creates the illusion that special teaching is being practiced inside. This works best at the beginning of a class when lots of students are milling about. When you emerge from the room with a blissful glow on your face, they will be convinced that there is some higher learning of profound truths going on inside. Of course there will always be some wise asses that think you’re just blowing dope. Ignore them.

Upon leaving the room, you must never open the door wide enough for students to look inside. Rather, slide cat-like through a small opening as you quickly close the door. For added effect, you might want to create the illusion that there are other yogis in the room by quickly turning your head as you say “Om Shanti.” In any event, it is important that you keep the door locked. Once the illusion is broken, your revenues will plummet as your students figure out that you are a yoga poser and leave your studio for another trendy yoga dive that has no doubt sprouted in another location not too far from your own.

TIP: Pad locks are used to great effect here. Use several to heighten the illusion of forbidden knowledge.

Bonus TIP: Create the sign for your secret room in Sanskrit lettering.
