Yoga Studio Design
The Name To make your studio a magnet for the neo-bobo crowd, you need to employ several strategies to entice them into your studio and away from your yoga competitors. One of these is the naming of your studio. There are two approaches that we will examine. It is up to you to decide which approach works best for your situation. Approach 1: If you are a complete nobody in the yoga world, consider naming your studio with an insipid-sounding, yoga-inspired word. You might try words like: Pure Tranquil Down Dog Up Dog Flow Serenity Balance Lotus Inhale Exhale The name of the studio must be pronounceable and bland. Remember that your clientele will have multiple personality issues, which by the way, is the reason that many of them will come to your studio in the first place. The issue of most concern here is the fear of feeling stupid, so you must avoid anything that might be too hard to pronounce. Keep the name short and English sounding. This is not the time to use groovy Sanskrit words that you have just learned, thinking it would be too cute to incorporate one of them into the name of your studio. It is very important that there is no hint of Hindu or Indian influence in the name. Approach 2: If you are a yoga star, then you may want to take the second approach to naming your yoga studio. This approach is a bit more daring and makes extensive use of Sanskrit and other funny sounding words. Yoga stars must always have studio names that are exotic and especially unpronounceable, at least at first glance. You must be adventurous here. Even though not many new beginning yoga students will come to your studio due to the intimidation factor of the name, you will nonetheless find that YIPs (the yogically hip – see Yoga Students chapter) will begin to visit your studio in droves. The YIPs are attracted to exotic, foreign sounding names and will love the way your yoga studio name rolls off the tip of their tongues as they mention it to their friends and family. Being able to pronounce the name of your studio will make them feel way cool and will also give them a sense of yoga superiority. This will have the YIPs coming back to your studio time after time. If you do decide to take this approach, name your studio using words like: Jivamukti Anusara Ashtanga Om Shakti Flow Iyengar Bikram TIP: For added effect, consider writing the name of the studio in Sanskrit characters. This will surely drive the YIPs wild.
